Listing your books and pricing
Listing books on Backlit Comics is completely free. When pricing your books, you can offer the book to customers for free - or you can charge a price of at least $0.50. First time users love previewing before purchasing, so we suggest offering the first couple issues in a series for free. If you're not sure what to charge, often issues are priced between $2 - $6 and graphic novels can range from $10-$40 depending on length and the number of issues it collects.
You can always edit your book's price later.
Commissions and fees - 70/30
When a user makes a purchase (let's say $10 not including tax), this is how it gets split out:
Stripe immediately takes a card processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30. In our example, this is equal to $0.59 which leaves $9.41. This is an industry standard.
You earn 70% 🤩 after that (this is above industry standard). Backlit Comics earns 30%. In our example, that means you'll earn $6.59 and Backlit Comics gets $2.82.
And that's it! There are no "delivery costs" or "payout fees" or any other ways to take your money. We strive to be transparent, fair, and always put creators first.
Account setup and payouts
We use Stripe to handle paying our creators. Stripe offers best-in-class security and transparency. Once you make your first sale, you'll be asked to create an account with Stripe and provide your bank or debit card details so that we can pay you. Without a Stripe account, we're unable to transfer you your money from customer purchases.
When a transaction takes place, Backlit Comics holds the funds for 3-7 days to account for potential chargebacks or refunds. After that waiting period, we transfer the money into your Stripe account. Stripe might hold these funds for an additional 2-7 days depending on various factors like the age of your account and the state of the original transaction. After that, the money is in your Stripe balance (but not yet in your bank account). On the 1st of every month for all accounts that have over $25, Stripe pays out that balance which transfers the money to your bank account/debit card automatically.
So for example if your Stripe balance is $15 on August 1st, you are not eligible for a payout on that day. However, let's say you make another $30 in August which brings your Stripe balance to $45. On September 1st, you would receive $45 into your bank account (though it may take Stripe a few days to complete the transfer depending on your bank) and then your Stripe balance would now show as $0.
There are no payout fees!! This is your money and you get every penny.
If you don't pass the $25 minimum for many months and are getting frustrated, reach out to our support team at support@backlitcomics.com. We can transfer your funds manually, but note that there might be an additional fee (since Backlit Comics actually loses money in this transfer and we need to keep the lights on).
